Carnival is a second world, a “temporary liberation from the prevailing truth and from the established order; it marked the suspension of all hierarchical rank, privileges, norms, and prohibitions.” – Bakhtin, Mikhail
I envision a world where all the Lebanese politicians sidestep the eschatological examination concerning their destinies and are transported straight to hell, paying the proverbial price for their actions. This utopia is my carnival. The caricatures depict the politicians as devils, trying to survive the hell they find themselves stuck in.
Bakhtin says: “Through all the stages of historic development, feasts were linked to moments of crisis, of breaking points in the cycle of nature or in the life of society and man.”
